| Veterinary Surgeon Dr Jesse L Steele | Veterinary Surgeon, Doctor Doug Bruce - Principle Veterinarian | |
| Born in 1993, and raised on a farm just outside Chinhoyi, Jesse grew up spending most of his time outdoors and reading. He went to Lomagundi College from Grade 0 through to Upper 6. He enjoyed sport but stood out in the classroom.
Jesse studied Veterinary Science at the University of Zimbabwe, qualifying in 2018. Jesse chose to become a vet as he loves to be outdoors and around animals. His favourite aspect of his job is that he is constantly moving around and seeing different places, people and animals; and NOT sitting behind a desk! He is throughly enjoying his work, summing it up in saying "Every day is different; this is just an incredible career path to have chosen." |

He grew up in Waterfalls, and every school holiday from the age of five and onwards, he went to stay on his grandfather’s farm in Featherstone. It was here, aged seven, that he watched in fascination as Doctor Madie, the Government Vet, replaced a prolapsed uterus, thereby saving a cow's life. It was an impressive achievement and an extraordinary procedure for such a young boy to observe. He was very inspired by this unusual experience. So - when his grandfather asked if he would like to do that job when he grew up, the answer was a resounding 'Yes'!
From that moment, Doug wanted to be a veterinary surgeon. His grandfather warned him that he would have to work very hard if he wanted to be accepted by the prestigious veterinary faculty at Onderstepoort. From that time on, he worked extremely hard at school, and enjoyed his school days Prospect Junior and Lord Malvern High Schools a great deal. His years at Onderstepoort were very hard work as well as great fun and very enjoyable. After qualifying, Doug worked in a mixed veterinary practice at Hartebeespoort Dam near Pretoria, then returned home and spent a year in a dedicated equine practice working for Dr Karl van Laeren in Harare. He then went to the United Kingdom, where he worked and travelled extensively, before returning to Zimbabwe and buying his own mixed veterinary practice in Mutare, which he successfully ran for a few years. Then followed a very enjoyable time in industry, working for Coopers as a Technical Adviser and later as Marketing Manager. In 1999, Doug joined Colcom in their Triple C Piggery, where he was part of a team that set up a large high health unit with 2200 sows. Whilst there he was involved in setting up an ostrich unit that sold 6000 birds a year, as well as supporting a 4000 head cattle herd. When the Zimbabwean economy went into crisis in 2005, Doug moved to South Africa and took up a position in the animal health industry, returning home when the situation stabilised three years later, and in early 2010 - Bargrove Veterinary Group was born. |
